Over-planning = loss of adventure?
One week today and the tournament finally kicks off. Planning for the World Cup started in about March 2009 when I first looked at a map of SA and determined which cities could be combined when travelling around the country by car. Since I like to explore different places, and more importantly FIFA turned down my request for "follow England" tickets (whereby one is guaranteed a ticket for all England's matches), I promptly applied for a hatful of tickets at 7 of the 9 host cities at 8 of the 10 grounds being used. J'burg has two stadia and I'm not going to Cape Town or Port Elizabeth given their distance from J'burg -- around 24 hours of pure driving. In fact I'm as prepared for this trip as a German couple we met on our honeymoon flight to China. Whilst we had booked no more than our first three nights' accommodation in China, they had their whole month-long sojourn planned out hour-by-hour. How ridiculously dull I thought at the time. Am I becoming slightly Germanic in my planning? Is that what being couped up in Afghanistan does to the brain? Have I taken the "adventure" out of this WC through over-planning? Well, at least I haven't disobeyed the prudent words of Her Majesty's Government, which solemnly warns to book all accommodation in advance. What a good and obedient boy I am.
